Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title for Mary as patroness of the Carmelite Order. The first Carmelites lived on Mount Carmel in Jerusalem 800 years ago. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is seen on the brown scapular, a sacramental worn around the neck which promises graces and aid to those who wear it faithfully. According to the Sisters of Carmel, the scapular is a silent prayer that tells Mary every moment of the day that we venerate her, love her and trust in her protection.
