Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, the son of a Spanish nobleman and black former slave. After his father left his family, Martin took odd jobs and eventually became a Dominican lay brother. His unique spirit took him in many directions; he worked as a housekeeper, barber and medical technician and even founded a home for orphans.
